The city of Salò lies at the end of the “Alto Garda Bresciano” Park and has about 10’000 inhabitants.
Several legends tell their stories about the founding of Salò, like the alleged colonisation on the part of the Etruscans, but evidence is provided since the founding of the Roman “Pagus Salodium”.
In the late Medieval the town became the most important centre along the eastern lakeshore, which was partly due to the change of the capital from Maderno to Salò and the influence of Beatrice della Scala, the wife of Bernabò Visconti, the Prince of Milan.
From 1440 on it was the Republic of Venice that chased the Visconti family and that led the luck of the coast. Salò was also a part of the so called Magnifica Patria, a sort of Republic consisting of 42 communities allied with Venice. Salò always abide by the Republic of Venice. The symbol of the lion that is spread all over the town witnesses the town’s fidelity toward Venice, which was later dearly purchased for Salò got under French bombing and looting during the battle against Brescia in the 18th century.
The last chapter of Salò’s history was written from 1943 to 1945 by the Duce Benito Mussolini who, after the failure of Italian Fascism, established the Republic of Salò.
